App Icon Sizes for iOS, Android, macOS & Web (2026)
Every app icon size you need: the single 1024 px iOS icon, Liquid Glass appearances, Android adaptive icon layers and safe zone, the 512 px Play Store icon and web favicons.
Start with one 1024 × 1024 px square master. Modern Xcode needs only that single image for iOS, the App Store uses it as the marketing icon, Google Play wants a 512 × 512 copy, and Android launcher icons and web favicons are all derived from it. The tables below list every size that still matters in 2026 and the rules that trip people up — transparency, masks and safe zones.
Quick answer: the sizes that matter
| Where | Size (px) | Format / rules |
|---|---|---|
| App Store (iOS, iPadOS, macOS) | 1024 × 1024 | PNG, no alpha / transparency, square corners |
| Xcode app icon (Xcode 14+) | 1024 × 1024 (single size) | Xcode generates the rest |
| Google Play Store | 512 × 512 | 32-bit PNG with alpha, max 1024 KB |
| Android adaptive icon | 108 × 108 dp per layer (432 px at xxxhdpi) | Foreground + background (+ monochrome) |
| Android legacy launcher | 48 / 72 / 96 / 144 / 192 | mdpi → xxxhdpi |
| macOS app (.appiconset) | 16 – 1024 | 1x and 2x of 16, 32, 128, 256, 512 pt |
| Web | 16, 32, 48, 180, 192, 512 | favicon.ico, apple-touch-icon, manifest icons |
iOS & iPadOS icons
Since Xcode 14, an app icon set can use the “single size” option: you provide one 1024 × 1024 image and Xcode generates every size the device needs at build time. That’s the default for new projects and what we recommend unless you need pixel-tuned small sizes.
- No transparency. The 1024 px App Store icon must not contain an alpha channel. Export it as an opaque RGB PNG.
- Square, not rounded. Supply a full-bleed square. iOS applies the corner mask; pre-rounded corners show up as dark or white slivers.
- No text you can avoid. Small text is unreadable at 60 pt and can’t be localized.
Legacy per-size list (older Xcode only)
| Use | Size (pt) | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone app | 60 pt @2x, @3x | 120, 180 |
| iPad app | 76 pt @1x, @2x | 76, 152 |
| iPad Pro app | 83.5 pt @2x | 167 |
| Spotlight | 40 pt @1x, @2x, @3x | 40, 80, 120 |
| Settings | 29 pt @1x, @2x, @3x | 29, 58, 87 |
| Notifications | 20 pt @1x, @2x, @3x | 20, 40, 60 |
| App Store | 1024 pt @1x | 1024 |
Liquid Glass & Icon Composer
With iOS 26 (and iPadOS 26, macOS 26 and watchOS 26), Apple introduced the Liquid Glass design language, and app icons are now rendered with glass-like highlights, depth and translucency by the system. To control how your icon looks, Apple added Icon Composer, a separate app that ships alongside Xcode 26.
- Layers instead of one flat bitmap. You import foreground artwork (ideally vector SVG, or PNG) as separate layers and groups over a background; the system applies the glass effects per layer.
- Appearances. One icon file covers the default (light), dark, clear and tinted appearances, with per-appearance adjustments where you need them.
- One file. Icon Composer saves a single
.iconfile that you add to your Xcode project in place of (or alongside) the asset catalog icon. - The App Store icon is still 1024 × 1024 without transparency.
Before iOS 26, iOS 18 had already added dark and tinted icon variants, configured as extra appearances in the asset catalog. If you support older iOS versions too, keep a light, dark and tinted 1024 px export available.
macOS icon sizes
A macOS AppIcon.appiconset (or a legacy .icns) uses five point sizes, each at 1x and 2x:
| Point size | @1x (px) | @2x (px) |
|---|---|---|
| 16 pt | 16 | 32 |
| 32 pt | 32 | 64 |
| 128 pt | 128 | 256 |
| 256 pt | 256 | 512 |
| 512 pt | 512 | 1024 |
Traditionally Mac icons drew their own shape with transparent margins. macOS 26 moves Mac icons to the same rounded-rectangle shape as iOS, and icons that don’t fit that shape may be displayed inside a generic container — so a full-bleed square master (or an Icon Composer file) is now the safer choice for Mac too.
Android adaptive & legacy icons
Since Android 8.0 (API 26), launcher icons are adaptive icons: two layers that each launcher masks to its own shape (circle, squircle, rounded square…) and can animate with parallax.
| Layer / area | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Foreground layer | 108 × 108 dp | Your logo, on transparency |
| Background layer | 108 × 108 dp | Solid color, gradient or pattern — must be opaque |
| Visible area | Inner 72 × 72 dp | The outer 18 dp per side is reserved for masking and motion |
| Safe zone | Central 66 dp circle | Keep the logo in here so no mask clips it |
| Monochrome layer | 108 × 108 dp | Used for themed icons on Android 13+; a single-color silhouette |
In pixels, 108 dp is 108 px at mdpi, 162 at hdpi, 216 at xhdpi, 324 at xxhdpi and 432 at xxxhdpi. Vector drawables avoid the per-density exports entirely. The layers are wired up in res/mipmap-anydpi-v26/ic_launcher.xml.
Legacy launcher icons
| Density | Folder | Size (px) |
|---|---|---|
| mdpi | mipmap-mdpi | 48 × 48 |
| hdpi | mipmap-hdpi | 72 × 72 |
| xhdpi | mipmap-xhdpi | 96 × 96 |
| xxhdpi | mipmap-xxhdpi | 144 × 144 |
| xxxhdpi | mipmap-xxxhdpi | 192 × 192 |
Google Play Store icon
- 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG (alpha allowed), max 1024 KB.
- Upload a full square — Google Play applies the rounded mask and shadow itself. Don’t pre-round corners or add a drop shadow.
- No badges or text suggesting ranking, price or Play categories (“#1”, “Free”, “Sale”, “Editor’s Choice”).
- It’s uploaded in Play Console, separately from the launcher icon in your app bundle, but they should match.

Web favicons & PWA icons
| File | Size (px) | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| favicon.ico | 16, 32, 48 (multi-size) | Browser tabs, bookmarks, legacy browsers |
| favicon-32x32.png | 32 × 32 | Modern browser tabs |
| apple-touch-icon.png | 180 × 180 | iOS “Add to Home Screen” — opaque, iOS rounds it |
| icon-192.png | 192 × 192 | Web app manifest, Android home screen |
| icon-512.png | 512 × 512 | Manifest, PWA splash screen |
| maskable-512.png | 512 × 512 | Manifest with purpose “maskable”; keep the logo inside a centered circle 80% of the icon’s width |

Our app icon generator takes one 1024 × 1024 image and exports a ZIP in your browser with:
- an iOS
AppIcon.appiconsetwithContents.json(single size, optional legacy sizes) and an opaque 1024 px App Store icon; - a macOS icon set;
- Android mipmaps, adaptive icon foreground/background XML with a monochrome entry, round icons and the 512 × 512 Play icon;
- a web pack: favicon.ico, PNG favicons, apple-touch-icon, maskable icon and a manifest snippet.
It doesn’t build Liquid Glass .icon files — use Apple’s Icon Composer for layered iOS 26 icons. Once your icon is done, carry its colors into your screenshots in the editor.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an app icon be?
Design a 1024 × 1024 px master. That is the App Store icon size and the source Xcode uses for every iOS size; Google Play needs a 512 × 512 px version, and Android launcher and web icons can be generated from the same master.
Do I still need all the iOS icon sizes?
No. Since Xcode 14 you can supply a single 1024 × 1024 image and Xcode generates the smaller sizes. The full list of 20–83.5 pt sizes is only needed for older Xcode versions or if you want hand-tuned small icons.
Can an iOS app icon have transparency?
No. The App Store icon must be a 1024 × 1024 PNG without alpha or transparency, and you should supply a full square — iOS applies the rounded corners itself.
What size is the Google Play Store icon?
512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG with alpha, up to 1024 KB. Supply a full square; Google Play applies the rounded mask and shadow.
What is the Android adaptive icon safe zone?
Each adaptive icon layer is 108 × 108 dp, of which the inner 72 × 72 dp is visible after masking. Keep your logo inside the central 66 dp circle so no launcher mask cuts it off.
What is Icon Composer?
Icon Composer is Apple's app, introduced with iOS 26 and Xcode 26, for building layered icons that the system renders with the Liquid Glass material in default, dark, clear and tinted appearances. It produces a single icon file you add to your Xcode project.
What favicon sizes do I need?
A favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 px, a 32 × 32 PNG, a 180 × 180 apple-touch-icon, and 192 and 512 px PNGs (plus a 512 px maskable icon) in your web app manifest.
