Fix “The dimensions of one or more screenshots are wrong”

Why App Store Connect rejects screenshots as the wrong size or with an alpha channel, and how to fix every cause in a few minutes — no Photoshop needed.

Updated 5 min read

App Store Connect shows “The dimensions of one or more screenshots are wrong” when an image isn’t exactly one of the pixel sizes accepted for that display class. Being 1 px off, exporting at 2x instead of 3x, or dropping an iPad image into an iPhone slot all trigger it. The fix is to resize, crop or pad to an exact accepted size, export without an alpha channel, and upload to the matching slot.

Quick fix

  1. Check the actual pixel size of the file — on a Mac, select it in Finder and press ⌘I, or open it in Preview and choose Tools › Show Inspector.
  2. Compare it with the accepted sizes for the slot you’re uploading to (table below).
  3. Resize, crop or pad to an exact size. Our screenshot resizer does this in the browser, in batch.
  4. Export as JPEG or as PNG without alpha.
  5. Re-check the whole set in the screenshot checker, then upload.

Why App Store Connect rejects the size

CauseExampleFix
Not an exact accepted size1206 × 2620 instead of 1206 × 2622Resize, crop or pad to the exact size
Wrong export scaleA 402 × 874 pt frame exported at 2x gives 804 × 1748Export iPhone frames at 3x (402 × 874 pt → 1206 × 2622)
Wrong display class slotiPad 2064 × 2752 dropped into the iPhone 6.3″ slotUpload to the matching class, or make a set for that class
Status bar cropped offA cropped 1179 × 2457 captureKeep the full screen; only some old classes (e.g. 640 × 1096) accept no-status-bar sizes
Mixed orientationSome portrait, some landscape in one setKeep one orientation per set; rotated sizes are accepted
Resized by a design tool or chat app1080 × 2348 after sharingExport from the source file again at the exact size
Simulator not matching the required classScreenshots from a 5.5″ simulatorCapture on the simulator for the class you need (e.g. iPhone 17 for 6.3″)
Scaling isn’t enough if the ratio is different
1170 × 2532 (iPhone 14) can’t simply be scaled to 1206 × 2622 — the aspect ratios differ slightly, so a plain resize distorts the UI. Scale to fit and pad with your background color, or crop a few pixels after scaling to fill.

Sizes App Store Connect accepts

You can upload 1–10 screenshots per class and locale, as .png, .jpg or .jpeg. The full list, including older iPhones, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro, is in App Store screenshot sizes.

“Can’t contain alpha channels or transparencies”

The second most common screenshot error. App Store Connect rejects images that contain an alpha channel, even if every pixel is fully opaque — the channel itself is the problem. Design tools (Figma, Sketch, Photoshop) and the Simulator can all produce PNGs with alpha.

  • Export JPEG. JPEG can’t store alpha, so this always works. Use high quality to avoid artifacts on text.
  • PNG without alpha. In macOS Preview, File › Export, choose PNG and uncheck “Alpha”. In Photoshop, flatten and save as 24-bit PNG.
  • Transparent areas (e.g. around a device frame) must be filled with a background color first, or they turn black or white unpredictably when alpha is dropped.

HEIC images, as saved by iPhone cameras or some screenshot settings, aren’t accepted at all — convert to PNG or JPEG.

Fixing it on the command line

macOS: sips

sips ships with macOS. Note that -z takes height first, then width, and stretches to exactly those pixels without keeping the aspect ratio.

# Inspect size and alpha
sips -g pixelWidth -g pixelHeight -g hasAlpha in.png

# Resize to exactly 1206 × 2622 (height, then width)
sips -z 2622 1206 in.png --out out.png

# Pad to 1206 × 2622 with a background color (also height, then width)
sips -p 2622 1206 --padColor FFFFFF in.png --out out.png

# Convert to JPEG (drops alpha) or convert HEIC to PNG
sips -s format jpeg -s formatOptions 90 in.png --out out.jpg
sips -s format png in.heic --out out.png

# Batch: resize every PNG into an existing folder
sips -z 2622 1206 *.png --out resized/

ImageMagick

ImageMagick 7 uses the magick command (version 6 uses convert). Geometry is width × height; ! forces the exact size, ^ fills and crops. Quote the geometry so your shell doesn’t interpret ! or ^.

# Check size and channels
magick identify -format "%w x %h %[channels]\n" in.png

# Force exact size and drop the alpha channel
magick in.png -resize '1206x2622!' -alpha off out.png

# Scale to fill, then crop the overflow from the center (no distortion)
magick in.png -resize '1206x2622^' -gravity center -extent 1206x2622 -alpha off out.png

# Scale to fit, then pad with a background color (no distortion)
magick in.png -resize 1206x2622 -background '#FFFFFF' -gravity center -extent 1206x2622 -alpha off out.png

# Flatten real transparency onto white before removing alpha
magick in.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off out.png
-alpha off vs -alpha remove
-alpha off just discards the channel, so transparent pixels reveal whatever color they hold underneath — often black. If the image has real transparent areas, use -background <color> -alpha remove first.

Google Play upload errors

Google Play doesn’t require exact sizes, but Play Console rejects screenshots that break these rules:

RuleCommon causeFix
Longest side ≤ 2× shortestRaw 20:9 capture, e.g. 1080 × 2400Crop or pad to 1080 × 2160 (1:2) or 1080 × 1920 (9:16)

The feature graphic must be exactly 1024 × 500 px (no alpha), and the icon 512 × 512 PNG under 1024 KB. Details in Google Play screenshot sizes and the feature graphic guide.

Fixing it with our tools

  • Screenshot checker: drop in your images to see which App Store class or Play rule each one matches, and which fail on size, alpha, aspect ratio or file size.
  • Resizer: batch-resize to exact store sizes with crop or pad, remove transparency and convert PNG ↔ JPEG — all locally in your browser.
  • Editor: if you’re designing screenshots from scratch, every board is already an exact store size and exports opaque images, so the error doesn’t come up. Exports can use the fastlane folder layout for automated uploads.

Frequently asked questions

Why does App Store Connect say the dimensions of my screenshots are wrong?

App Store Connect accepts only a fixed list of exact pixel sizes per display class. If your image is even 1 px off, exported at the wrong scale, or dropped into the wrong device slot, it is rejected with this error.

What size should iPhone screenshots be to avoid the error?

For the required iPhone class (Dynamic Island, medium display) use exactly 1206 × 2622 px or 1179 × 2556 px in portrait, or the same values rotated for landscape. For the optional 6.9-inch class use 1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736 px.

How do I remove the alpha channel from a screenshot?

Export the image as JPEG, or as a PNG without alpha. On a Mac, Preview's Export dialog has an Alpha checkbox for PNG; on the command line, ImageMagick's -alpha off or converting to JPEG with sips removes it.

Does App Store Connect accept HEIC screenshots?

No. App Store Connect accepts .png, .jpg and .jpeg only. Convert HEIC files, for example with sips -s format png in.heic --out out.png on macOS.

Can I just upload a screenshot taken on my iPhone?

Usually yes, if the phone matches an accepted class — a native screenshot from an iPhone 17 Pro is 1206 × 2622 px. Problems start when the image is edited, cropped or resized afterwards, or shared through apps that compress or rescale it.

Why is my Google Play screenshot rejected?

Google Play rejects screenshots whose longest side is more than twice the shortest, that are smaller than 320 px or larger than 3840 px on a side, over 8 MB, or saved with an alpha channel. Crop tall 20:9 captures to 1:2 or 9:16 and export JPEG or 24-bit PNG.
